Jedediah-Smith Wilderness
Tucked in the northwestern corner of Wyoming lies the majestic Teton Range. It runs about 60 miles north-to-south and 20 miles wide, creating the western skyline of Jackson Hole. The eastern side of this range rises 7,000 feet directly out of the Jackson Hole valley without any foothills. The granite peaks form spectacular spires; the canyons run steep with rugged terrain. From the peaks, the view to the east includes Grand Teton National Park, while the view to the west includes the Jedediah-Smith Wilderness. The western canyons extend longer than those to the east, threading through foothills and offering safe routes to the high peaks. The western side grows greener and more colorful than the east. Wildflowers cover high alpine fields in summer. Streams run cold, pure, and blue at altitude, and lakes form from snowmelt in the spring. No wonder fascinating animals, from marmots to bears and eagles to elk, still roam this pristine land!
Absaroka Range: Teton Wilderness
For those who love to fly-fish, brook trout and cutthroat abound in the Absaroka Range. Lush with wildflowers, pine, and fir, this is the only western range formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. It features the awe-inspiring Pinnacle Buttes, as well as bighorn sheep, mule deer, and moose, among others.
Gros Ventre Range: Gros Ventre Wilderness
The Gros Ventre Range, located between the Wind River Range, the National Elk Refuge, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, embodies excellent scenery and wildlife opportunities. Also, the Gros Ventre River provides pristine fly-fishing settings. The range is almost 287 million years older than the Tetons, with more rounded peaks and gently sloping canyons.
